2025 Ford F-150 vs the Competition

2025 Ford F-150 vs the Competition

The year 2025 marks the golden anniversary for the F-150. There had been Ford pickup trucks before that, of course, many of which are still on the road, but 1975 was the first year Ford’s mainstream light pickup truck had the F-150 nameplate. Just two years later, the F-150 became the best-selling pickup in the U.S. Five years later, it became the best-selling vehicle in the country, and has remained king of the hill ever since.

Naturally, other pickup truck manufacturers have worked hard to dethrone the F-150, but Ford has worked just as hard or harder to defend its position. The truck’s sales numbers have enabled Ford to offer a wide variety of choices for a wide variety of consumers. There are three body styles:

  • Regular Cab
  • SuperCab
  • SuperCrew

There are eight different trim levels, from the strictly ready-for-work XL to the wild dune-hopping Raptor to the luxurious Platinum. Across the model line, there are six different internal combustion engine choices:

  • 2.7L EcoBoost V6; 325 hp
  • 5.0L V8; 400 hp
  • 3.5L EcoBoost V6; 400 hp
  • 3.5L PowerBoost Full Hybrid V6; 430 hp
  • High-Output 3.5L EcoBoost V6; 450 hp
  • High-Output Supercharged 5.2L V8; 720 hp

Plus, there’s the all-electric F-150 Lightning. But it’s more than just choice that keeps the F-150 on top. Read further to see how the F-150 betters its competition. Unless otherwise specified, all dimensional comparisons will be of the full four-door cab and smaller cargo bed, which is the most popular configuration for the F-150 and its competitors.

2025 Ford F-150 vs Chevrolet Silverado

Ford and Chevrolet have been fierce rivals for over a century, but nowhere is that competition more acutely felt than when the Silverado competes against the F-150. The Silverado has never quite managed to knock the F-150 off its throne. As such, it closely mimics the F-150’s broad model line, with three comparable cab configurations, nine trim levels, and four ICE engines.

  • Both the F-150 and Silverado offer turbocharged 2.7-liter base engines. A key difference, however, is that Ford’s is a V6 compared to the four-cylinder engine from Chevy. As such, it is inherently smoother and provides 325 hp compared to 310 hp for the Silverado.
  • Ford pairs its base engine with a ten-speed automatic transmission. Silverado provides an eight-speed transmission for its base engine, saving its ten-speed automatic for upgraded engines.
  • The Silverado’s engine choices top out at 420 horsepower, while the F-150 has three drivetrains above 420 horsepower (430, 450, and 720 hp).
  • Ford offers a hybrid model with its 3.5-liter V6 as the core engine for those who want to spend less time and money at the pump. The Silverado does not offer a hybrid option.
  • Both model lines have high maximum towing capacities, but the F-150 edges out the Silverado with a maximum of 13,500 pounds compared to 13,000.
  • The F-150 has greater ground clearance than the Silverado among its non-off-road focused 4×4 trucks (9.4 inches vs. 8.1).
  • The F-150 also stretches the trips between gas pumps with a 36-gallon fuel tank compared to 24 gallons for the Silverado.
  • When comparing the full four-door cabs, the two models are close, but the Ford edges the Silverado out in several key metrics such as rear legroom (43.6 inches vs. 43.4) front/rear shoulder room (66.7/66.0 vs. 66.0/65.2), and front/rear hip room (62.5/62.6 vs. 61.2/60.2).
  • At the base level, the F-150 offers a significantly larger center touchscreen (12.0 inches vs. 8.0).
  • The safety of blind spot and rear-cross traffic alerts are standard on the F-150 but optional on the Silverado.

2025 Ford F-150 vs Ram 1500

The Ram pickup’s name is slightly newer than the F-150, having first appeared on the Dodge pickup truck in 1989. When Ram separated from Dodge in 2010, the 1500 name was introduced to designate the light-duty equivalent of the F-150 and Silverado, both of which it has consistently trailed in sales. Recently, Ram 1500s have transitioned from the former Hemi V8 engines to the “Hurricane” turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engines, with the 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6s as the base engines. Models are available in Quad Cab (shorter rear doors) and Crew Cab (four standard-sized doors) configurations. Cargo beds are offered in lengths of 5-foot 7-inches and 6-foot 4-inches. There are eight trim levels, starting with the basic Tradesman and culminating with the Tungsten, the flagship of the model line.

  • The base 2.7-liter turbocharged V6 in the F-150 has 325 horsepower, compared to 305 from the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6 in the Ram 1500.
  •  The difference in torque is even greater: The Base F-150 engine produces 400 lb-ft at 2,750 rpm, compared to 271 lb-ft at 4,900 rpm for the Ram 1500 V6.
  • The F-150 offers a selection of six engines to suit your needs compared to just three engines offered by the Ram 1500.
  • Among engine upgrades, the F-150 3.5-liter EcoBoost produces more torque than the Standard Output Ram 1500 Hurricane engine (500 lb-ft vs. 469).
  • The F-150 has a ten-speed transmission versus an eight-speed automatic for the Ram 1500.
  • The F-150’s fuel capacity is significantly greater than that of the Ram 1500 (36 gallons vs. 26) for more range (756 miles vs. 572).
  • Among the non-off-road-focused models, the F-150 has greater ground clearance than the Ram 1500 (8.5 inches vs. 7.7).
  • The base F-150 also has a greater approach angle (21.8° vs. 17.9°) and departure angle (22.9° vs. 20.7°) than the Ram 1500.
  • The base towing capacity of the F-150 is 7,600 pounds compared to 6,640 pounds for the Ram 1500.
  • The F-150 can tow a maximum of 13,500 pounds versus the 11,550-pound maximum towing capacity of the Ram 1500.
  • The F-150 has a little more rear shoulder room than the Ram 1500 (66.0 inches vs. 65.7), which is useful when you have three people in the back seat.
  • At the base level, the F-150 offers a significantly larger center touchscreen than the Ram 1500 (12.0 inches vs. 8.4).
  • For long drives, the F-150 provides the hands-free highway driving technology of BlueCruise, while the Ram 1500 lacks comparable technology.

2025 Ford F-150 vs Toyota Tundra

Named after a vast, flat, treeless Arctic region of Europe, Asia, and North America in which the subsoil is permanently frozen, the Tundra is Toyota’s full-size pickup truck. It is similar to the Ram 1500 in that it does not offer a V8 engine, instead offering a twin-turbocharged 3.4-liter V6 engine in multiple states of tune. Like the F-150, all engines are paired with ten-speed transmissions. The Tundra also joins the F-150 in offering this powertrain as part of a hybrid system. Like the Ram 1500, the Tundra offers a shortened four-door cab in addition to its CrewMax full four-door cab. It offers a choice of 5.5-, 6.5-, and 8.1-foot beds, the latter tied strictly to the smaller cab.

  • When comparing the F-150’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 to the Tundra’s 3.4-liter twin-turbocharged engine in most trims (excluding the base SR), the F-150 produces 400 horsepower, whereas the Tundra generates 389.
  • Also, in comparing these two engines, the F-150 produces 500 lb-ft of torque compared to 479 for the Tundra.
  • The F-150’s 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 4×2 achieves slightly improved city, highway, and combined fuel mileage of 19/25/21 mpg, respectively, compared to the non-hybrid Tundra 4×2, which offers 18/23/20.
  • The F-150 hybrid, which only comes as a 4×4, gets better fuel mileage at 22/24/23 mpg than the Tundra hybrid 4×4 at 19/22/21.
  • The F-150’s fuel capacity is significantly greater than the Tundra’s (36.0 gallons vs. 22.5).
  • The F-150 can tow a maximum of 13,500 pounds versus the 11,000-pound maximum towing capacity of the Tundra.
  • The F-150 has a standard seating capacity of six compared to five for the Tundra.
  • Rear passengers in the F-150 have more room in all dimensions, including:
  • Legroom (43.6 inches vs. 41.6)
  • Shoulder room (66.0 inches vs. 62.4)
  • Hip room (62.6 inches vs. 60.5)
  • Head room (40.4 inches vs. 38.5)
  • The F-150’s short bed is slightly longer than the Tundra’s (67.1 inches vs. 65.6).
  • The F-150 offers the BlueCruise hands-free highway driving technology for long drives, while the Tundra does not have comparable technology.
