Ford Expedition MAX Versus GMC Yukon XL And Chevy Suburban

The Ford Expedition MAX is all-new for 2025 and offers buyers amazing new technology with a 24-inch panoramic display, a liftgate that splits (giving you a proper folding tailgate and a separate hatch), plus best-in-class towing capabilities.

Pricing, Trim Levels, and Power
The 2025 Expedition MAX starts from $67,515 and is available in three different trim levels including Active, Platinum, and King Ranch. All models feature a 3.5-liter EcoBoost twin-turbocharged V6 that produces 400 horsepower and 480 lb-ft of torque, while the Platinum can be optioned with a High Output (HO) version of the 3.5-liter EcoBoost shared with the F-150 Raptor that has 440 horsepower and 510 lb-ft of torque. Peak power comes in at 5,200 rpm (5,400 with the HO engine) while peak torque is available from just 3,300 revs in both engines, allowing drivers to build speed quickly and easily whether towing or not. The engine is mated to a ten-speed SelectShift automatic transmission.
Price Comparison
When compared to its main rivals, the GMC Yukon XL and Chevrolet Suburban, the new Expedition MAX stands tall as a jack-of-all trades. The Suburban has a base price of $64,195 while the Yukon XL starts at $72,395. Both GM SUVs have three engines—5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8s along with a 3.0-liter turbodiesel. However, none of them reach the same level of power and torque as the HO Expedition.

Legroom and Cargo Capacity
One of the main reasons to buy a large, full-size SUV is to have plenty of cargo room and space for an entire family and all of their luggage. The Expedition MAX offers the most legroom for second- and third-row passengers with 42.2 and 43.5 inches, respectively, which is two-tenths of an inch and 6.8 inches more than the Chevy and GMC long wheelbase models. Behind the third row, owners will find 37.4 cubic feet of space, 84.5 when the second row is stowed, and 123.1 cubic feet when all rows are folded. The new Expedition also has the latest and greatest technology with Ford Digital Experience and its 24-inch panoramic information display and 13.2-inch infotainment screen.

Best-In-Class Towing Capacity
Towing is another area where the all-new Expedition MAX is also better than its competitors from General Motors. The Suburban and Yukon XL both have a maximum towing capacity of 8,300 pounds when equipped with 2WD and the 5.3-liter V8. Ford made sure to give Expedition buyers the best ability to tow with 9,600 pounds of max towing when properly equipped (4WD and the standard EcoBoost engine). The Expedition MAX Platinum trim with the High Output engine can tow 9,000 pounds.

A KBB Review
Kelley Blue Book (KBB), the famed industry price analysis company, recently tested the Expedition MAX against the Chevy and GMC and concluded, “These full-size SUVs are both excellent, but the Ford Expedition earns the title of our Best Buy Award; it’s our favorite in this class. We love the turbo V6 powertrain, the Ford Digital Experience, the roomy third row, and clever features like the split liftgate.”
